Sometimes innovation can be taking a really old game style and polishing it until it shines (Hammerwatch).

On the business side, (tying in with discussions from the greenlight post), the flood of new games on Steam now and more later, will be a boon if even a few of them become hits, this innovation on the business end means many people will get to experience many more innovations on the game/creative side.

I'm personally still thrilled that Christine Love has been able to have her works on Steam, Analogue: A Hate Story and the expanded release Hate Plus are both games I'd never have expected to have found on Steam. I bought them on a whim and barely a month goes by that I don't think back on the game and the stories within it, sincerely moving stuff!

As a final side note on ambition, absolutely no game (that is likely to get a release on steam or other platforms) is going to be easy to make, it'll always take serious effort and drive to get it out no matter the platform (I once spent 4 months building a pokemon simulator in Excel for a club RPG game day and even that was full of bugs!). I view all games as being ambitious both creatively and effort wise, even if I don't enjoy a game or love it myself, it doesn't mean the creator didn't pour out their own effort and creativity into it (mechanic-wise or even coding wise!)

I hope the industry can keep growing up more and more and expanding creativity further and further til I can go into a game store and see thousands of games, pick one out from a genre I like and take it home for an experience, like we have with books today!

Re: “Yay!” But “Hmm…” The Ramifications of the 100-Game Greenlight

Approve.

Re: “Yay!” But “Hmm…” The Ramifications of the 100-Game Greenlight

It's an interesting problem to have but given that many people (including myself) will barely touch a game if it's not on their steam list, it's probably better for everyone overall. I loved the book, and it was cool getting immersed into that world (even though the combat mechanics were much different in the book). Nice job. Wish it was longer.

The music is also quite wonderful. Just so people know, to download you need to click on MP3 (or WAV) and then right click on the black page that comes up. Select "Save as." It took me a minute to figure that out.

Also, thanks so much for letting us play the game for free! And more importantly, for letting us download that awesome music for free... Yeah, it's a really thorny topic, and it was really interesting seeing the AAA side of things on the panel.

Definitely hit the nail on the business vs creative innovation. It's really interesting how people are lining up to innovate on the business side of things.

Your point about Dear Esther is interesting as well - it actually highlights something I've realised over the last few days. I really don't like the word 'innovation' at all. I also really dislike it when people are really hung up over whether their ideas are unique or innovative.

Because at the end of the day, it's really easy to come up with a unique idea. What's hard is to actually execute on a gameplay experience, and what's really hard is to execute on a unique experience. The idea is so much less important, and so much easier to generate, than the general consensus would believe. In other words: a good, unique idea can get people in front door, but it won't make your game a success.

As you say though, we are definitely progressing ok. I like to push for more ambitious innovation, coz it's what I find interesting. At the same time, we're doing pretty well at making new things.

Re: Innovations in Games: My Thoughts

Good write-up Paul, it's a topic you've nutshelled decently since innovation can be a misleading or often nebulous term at the best of times.

For the sake of argument, I see two types of 'innovation', despite being mutually inclusive to one another - business and creative innovation. We're seeing a lot of tremendous progress with the former, such as paying for alpha models/game pitches, the successful spread of game platforms, advances in manipulative and cunning monetisation, and even seasonal discounts/bundles in online marketplaces. All these varying contribute to the design of games, or even how games are perceived creatively.

With the other type of innovation, it gets tricky, because you're placing an objective label on something that's very much subject to preference. For example, I don't find Dear Esther at all daring, not even from a conceptual point of view. But you can, of course, make concrete observations of games that others may not have considered, and productively use that shared knowledge for future game making or analysis. I therefore think it's more important to first 'innovate' ways we look at games creatively, before considering whether we need to 'make' more innovation. As you say 'More perspectives means more ambitious innovation.'

That's not to take away from your other thoughts, which are pretty sound in getting more diverse and ambitious titles. For instance, I'm totally with you in needing more women and more people who aren't as obsessional over games (like yourself) to be designers. But I think we're pretty insatiable or impatient when it comes to playing new types of experience. Considering we're making in a hyper-consumerist, ADD society, I think we're progressing ok. We're still an infant industry and we're making new ideas, even if the stories are shit, the interface is unpolished or it's a one-trick pony. These are still games that need to be made so we can think and design our way to a better future.

Re: Games

Thanks!
